Accident Insurance

Accident Insurance

Overview

Motor vehicle and other unexpected accidents cause many trips to the emergency room each year. Your major medical insurance will help with many of your expenses, but wouldn’t you feel better knowing you’ll have extra help paying some of your bills?

Accident insurance pays you benefits for specific injuries and events resulting from a covered accident. The amount paid depends on the type of injury and care received. Features of this insurance include:

  • Benefit payments go directly to you. You may use the benefit payments for any purpose you like.
  • Group coverage through your employer offers competitive rates; see your benefits guide for rate details. Your premium is paid through convenient payroll deduction.
  • You can elect spouse/domestic partner and children to age 26 if Associate coverage is elected.
  • Guaranteed issue: No medical questions or tests are required for coverage
  • If you leave your current employer or retire, you can take your coverage with you.

The coverage also includes a Sport Accident Benefit. This means that if your accident occurs while participating in an organized sporting activity (as defined in the certificate of coverage); the benefit amounts in the accident hospital care, accident care or common injuries sections will be increased by 25%; to a maximum additional benefit of $1,000.

Accident Insurance is a limited benefit policy. It is not health insurance and does not satisfy the requirement of minimum essential coverage under the Affordable Care Act.

How It Works

FAQs

Answers about the plan, including eligibility, options, enrollment, customer service and more.

  • Who is the provider?

Accident Insurance is underwritten by ReliaStar Life Insurance Company (Minneapolis, MN), a member of the Voya® family of companies. Voya Employee Benefits is a division of ReliaStar Life Insurance Company.
  • How can this help me?

Some families may not budget for the costs associated with accidents. When an accident does occur, the last thing on your mind is the charges accumulating:

    • Ground ambulance
    • Emergency room treatment
    • Medical equipment
    • Surgery and general anesthesia
    • Stitches
    • X-rays
    • CT scan

These costs can add up fast. Most families have medical insurance that will cover a majority of the expenses. But, what about the out-of-pocket medical expenses, such as lost wages an employee or spouse/domestic partner loses when out of work or staying home to care for an injured family member? You hope that an accident never happens, but at some point you very well may take a trip to your local emergency room. If that time comes, wouldn’t it be nice to have an insurance plan that pays you a benefit for your covered accident and injuries regardless of any other insurance you have? Accident insurance does just that, providing benefits to cover the costs associated with covered accidents.

  • Who can enroll?

Available to U.S. full-time benefits-eligible Associates who are not covered by a collective bargaining agreement. Associates must be working 30+ hours per week to enroll.

If you have coverage on yourself, your spouse will be covered for the same Accident benefits as you. “Spouse” includes domestic partners or civil union partners as defined by your employer’s plan.

If you have coverage on yourself, your eligible children can be covered up to age 26. Your children will be covered for the same Accident benefits as you.
  • When can I enroll?

As a new hire, you can enroll within your employer’s benefits eligibility guidelines. Outside of your new hire period, enrollment is limited to the company’s annual enrollment.
  • What if my employment status changes?

When you leave or retire from your employer, you can continue your coverage without interruption, subject to applicable law and the policies' terms and conditions. You will receive information to continue coverage directly with the insurance carrier.
  • Will I have to take a medical exam to get this coverage?

No! Your Accident insurance is guaranteed issue, which means no medical questions or tests are required to enroll in this coverage.
